About Rick and GuitarLicksAndTabs

Thank you for visiting Guitar Licks and Tabs!

If I can play these licks/solos and songs, you can learn them too. I show you how, make the tab available, all you do is practice.

You may notice several things; I am not a pro, but love guitar; and I don’t add lectures to the videos.

The format is intended to provide a few licks and solos to play around with, along with the tablature, in a format similar to if you asked a friend how they played a certain lick, solo or song. What fingering or chords were used, etc.

They wouldn’t likely take twenty-minutes to explain a ten-second lick.

I love guitars, and as possible, given the limitations experienced following a couple of strokes, post favorite guitar licks/solos and songs, as well as guitar tablature that will help those who wish to learn them.

NOTE – September 2019

Over the past few years I’ve experienced some additional problems that have cost me the remainder of my gear. As I can borrow gear I will make new videos. If you subscribe, you’ve noticed a drop-off in posts over that time. I hope to resume posting as this is a great hobby…once I solve some of these problems related to health and finances. Thanks for understanding.

  1. Hi Just think you’re a really awesome guy and thanks for sharing your talent – have had great fun messing around with your steely dan reeling in the years and there’s loads of interesting stuff here – miles better than the tutorial style of guitar video where they proscribe every nuance – hey – where’s the freedom of expression in that.
Don’t expect you to know this tune but favourite guitar solo in the world is by a band from Holland – golden earring – who had a huge hitin the early 70’s with radar love – well in Europe at least – and then disappeared – well they’re still going and still gigging and think their song vanilla queen from the album moontan is a thing of real beauty – tune is available of youtube everywhere but been trying to figure out the ‘slow’ guitar solo for years and if you fancy doing a euro rock style thing – be much appreciated – rhythm guitar part is Dm – then A/G played with the D shape on the 7th to 9th frets – followed by an open string sweep descent on C, B and then G to end up with the open D string sounding. Solo over that is simply heaven – and if you fancy having a go and posting will be even more of a fan than I am now – if you don’t fancy it, don’t worry – still think you are one hell of a great guy!!

Here’s the youtube link – rhythm guitar phase mentioned above starts at 3:30ish solo itself starts at 4:30 – lasts til 5:10

    Richard

    • Twilight Zone is my favorite of Golden Earring…. brought this group to my attention. But then… I’m was Goth before Goth was ‘cool’.

  2. The Radio isn’t playing some forgotten song, I grew up during that period and love it. I don’t recall if I knew how to play the song before my strokes, but I’ll figure it out and post it as soon as I can.

Thank you for the kind words. Do me a favor, and subscribe to the blog for updates, as well as share them on facebook or wherever. That would be great help for me. Either way, thanks again for the generous comment.

edit: Just realize that I’m being trolled. I’m slow that way, thinking the best of people. Anonymous user who is following me without subscribing(?) makes request for simple solo and writes: “rhythm guitar part is Dm – then A/G played with the D shape on the 7th to 9th frets – followed by an open string sweep descent on C, B and then G to end up with the open D string sounding.” Sounds as though this person would be able to figure out that solo, and is asking me to do work for which there is no audience, including my new non-subscribing follower. Sad world.

  3. Thanks so much for replying and glad radar love at least made it stateside – Hope radar love never reaches forgotten song status – but hey. I’m 51 so that song is part of my youth and moontan is probably still one of my top 10 albums. Radar love is actually the first song I learnt to play properly on guitar and still love messing round with it but Vanilla Queen is so much the stand out song on the album in terms of goosebumps!! Never really nailed that solo tho – hence my first message. Was lucky enough to see earring in their heyday at the gigs that became the Live album – they also toured UK last year and it was great in nostalgia but they haven’t aged well!! Don’t really do twitter but will certainly give you a like on facebook – thing you’re doing a great thing and love your choice of songs – keep on rockin!
    Richard

  4. Hiya in via facebook now and think I’m following updates and blog – oh – just seen the edit – please don’t think this is a stitch up or troll – I just love what you do – and i can play the solo of sorts but it’s not quite right somehow – just thought I’d love to see someone else have a go at it and see what they think – to me – it’s one of the most beautiful guitar solos ever – thought you might enopy….

  5. Richard, thanks for checking out my site and liking “Missing California”! I’m glad to discover yours as I’m trying to learn to play. ‘Trying’ being the key word. 🙂 The weather here makes for moody musicians (i,e, Nirvana, Pearl Jam). Keep sharing your talent!

  6. Richard, Thank you very much for visiting my blog and liking my Stormy Monday post. My usual followers did not seem to get that one, yet I reached you and more, the musical realm of the blogosphere! I think I’ll stay and look around, and listen too. Thanks again, Richard. Happy blogging!

    • Thanks for stopping by. As you can see, my posts wouldn’t really attract much attention, as they contain little writing, and I don’t lecture on the videos. Just the lick/solo or song, and the tablature so they can learn them. But I appreciate your visit all the same. Stormy Monday has been a favorite of mine for a couple of decades, so your title instantly grabbed me, and you kept my interest. Thanks again for your post.

    • Thank you for stopping by. Should you decide to start, I would be happy to provide a few links to sites that are set up to properly teach guitar, and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have along the way. My blog is geared towards those who know how to play, and who are interested in learning a few popular licks/solos and songs. For the most part, I think it would be frustrating for true beginners to attempt most of these.

That said, I would willingly and happily answer any questions.

  7. I find your site very interesting. My 11 year old has been playing the guitar on and off for a few years and just said he would like to get back into it. It’s great that you’re using the blog for your passion despite the battles you have fought. I’ve gone through some similar issues and the blogging has become a great outlet for me. Thanks for visiting my blog and thanks for yours!

    • Thank you so kindly for stopping by! There are many wonderful sites for those just starting out in guitar. If your eleven-year-old has any questions, I would be happy to provide my two-cents.

  8. Thanks for liking a post on Erudite Reflections! I’m not much of a guitar player myself, incredibly basic but its something I’d like to pursue, piano is my labour of love 🙂 It always makes me happy to see people so passionate about their music 🙂 Hopefully see you soon.

  9. Hi …. Nice to see you here
Thanks for your visit n liking on my last post, I really appreciated that ….
I like music ….. I enjoyed music … nothing better than music to the ears.
But the most I like is piano ….. I can feel the passion on the music.
Once again thanks for your visit. Have a good day’s …

  10. Hi Richard,

I’m checking in first to say I so appreciate your visiting and liking my Life Your Way Coaching blog and also to say I so appreciate what you’re doing on your blog. My brother is a phenomenal guitarist and writer and I’m going to send him the link to your blog because I’m sure he would appreciate it. Thanks again my friend. Peggy Nelson, CLC

    • Well thank you Peggy first for visiting, second for the kind comment and passing it to your brother, but I’m not sure a phenomenal guitarist is going to find my hacking away on a few licks/solos and songs all that compelling. ; ^ )

  11. Hello. Please forgive my tardiness, but I took two short trips and have lost track of keeping up with my blog stuff. I stopped by to (finally!) thank you for liking one of my recent posts. I always get a kick out of it, and I appreciate it. So—thank you. 🙂

    • Well, thank you for stopping by. As you can see, my posts are never going to be useful to a super-majority of visitors, but it’s okay. Truly doing this because I need to, and want to, much more so than a need for approval or acceptance.

But for that other person (who may or not even be out there) with the same interests in poorly-played guitar licks, from my favorite musicians, and who hasn’t yet learned them, I’m just the guy to deliver the goods!

      Thanks for stopping by.

  12. Thanks for dropping by my blog. I think yours is the first guitar-related blog I’ve came across. I have always been fascinated with the instrument, ever since I first discovered rock music in the 80s. Im definitely not a pro. I hardly play. Lol. But if the song has simple basic chords, I can probably strum along. Great blog! 🙂

    • Well thank you. My posts won’t be interesting to the average blogger as they are nothing more than my favorite guitar licks/solos and songs, with tab for others to learn, so I have no illusions of grandeur, but it’s nice to have goals as they assist me with my recovery.

      Thank you again!

  13. Hi Richard – thanks so much for stopping by and liking my tiny blog post today! As you might have noticed on my “about ” page, I am a guitar player …but a poor one. Used to play a lot more in my Africa years, but very little lately. Will try to take it up again – love blues..
It’s great you are blogging. All the best with your recovery.

    • Well, we are two of a kind. I have been happily playing guitar poorly for decades. Once I pass the audition in my den, I hope to become the main-act in the living room. Dream big or stay home, right?!?

    • Well, we are two of a kind. I have been happily playing guitar poorly for decades. Once I pass the audition in my den, I hope to become the main-act in the living room. Dream big or stay home, right?!? And thank you for stopping by!

    • ’twas my pleasure. I’m sorry that most who stop here will find that my blog is a very narrow-interest blog. I almost wish that there was a “like – but don’t feel the need to visit” button on other people’s blogs, so they could enjoy the “like” without wasting their time on mine.

  14. Hello! First, I think it’s the custom to thank you for your visit at Block Usado. But I really want to thank you for liking that post -I wasn’t that sure about it xP.
That aside, you’re truly awesome at this! I have a few friends who’ll be thankfull to know there’s a site like this for them to pick free advice on these solos, so I guess they’ll pay you a visit as well.
Anyways, have a nice day ^^.

  15. Hi Richard, you’ve “liked” a couple of my posts which have nothing to do with guitars! Thanks you for stopping by and reading my blog. A pleasure to have you aboard. I might have some licks on my site but they have nothing to do with guitars, lol. Cheers, Miss Maura

  16. phwanng de-di beedle lang prowwng gong ing bing! Can you hear it! I have a few poems with guitars in – see what you think! Go to my site, go to the bottom of the page, in the ‘search’, enter ‘guitar’ and see what you get …

  17. Thanks for liking my post, “In the beginning..” I do not play but guitar music, especially blues, is the only kind of music I can listen to for any length of time. I will be posting a variety of my poems from time to time if that would interest you. Thanks, Leo

  18. Hi, thanks for liking my And I Quote… #2 post on my blog. Really surprised to see what your blog’s about!! I have a YouTube channel that I’d love for you to take a look at. I sing and play the guitar. You never know I might have a request for you at some point…haha 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQjgzHf-Gwc&list=UUPBrNOZYNdMssyyWccnKT5A&index=3&feature=plcp This is a link to one of my videos, probably my favourite one on the guitar. I hope you like it 🙂 x

  19. Thanks for stopping by my blog, Richard. RA made some crooked fingers on my guitar playing hands. Never was much good, but during the “Blowin’ in the Wind” days it was enough to get a good sing along started. Keep up the great work!!

    • Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I’m nothing more than an amateur guitarist myself, but feel if one has something to share, they should, so I do.

What is music, if not exactly for the community aspects you mention….a good sing-along.

Thank you again, for stopping by.
      Richard

  20. I think your website is refreshing! Simple and easily navigable. Also I haven’t actually seen a guitar-helping-along site that’s actually readable in the recent past.

Thank you for dropping by my site. Do contribute if possible, and thanks again:)

    • Thank you for the kind comment. There is no shortage of guitar sites that delve into beginning to advanced instruction, including music theory, so I thought I would make it really simple. Just a demonstration of a lick/solo/song, and the tablature, no lecture.

Naturally, I recognize that my blog will be of interest to only a few, but I don’t mind.

Once again, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

  21. Wow! I’m impressed with all the work you put into this blog. Brilliant. I play a little acoustic and even then I don’t do any advanced stuff. So you can imagine my amazement. 😉

    • Aww, don’t…stop….don’t stop… Thanks, but I could never consider playing my favorite licks to be any kind of “work.” And I really don’t consider anything I do as advanced, but it was nice to read. B ^ )
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

  22. My son loves guitars. He has photos of four of his guitars on his photography blog. My brother also plays and gave my son his first guitar.

    Thanks for liking my post.

  23. If wishes were horses…but they are not and therefore I must remain, alas, musically challenged forever more. I tried to learn to play the piano along with my son but they lost me at Do re me… 😀
I do love to listen to music though. All kinds of music. Especially sweet tunes like the ones you play in your videos and so I will be visiting often just to listen to them. Nothing like music to give one wings, dont you think?
Thank you for stopping by my blog and liking a post. It means a lot. 🙂
    Happy playing!!!

  24. Hey Richard…..very nice and very helpful still, since I play mostly acoustic guitar. It appears you don’t want to write much but I hope you will answer some quetions about guitar if, indeed, they arise. Thanks for liking my poem and would appreciate how you stumbled up on it. thanks….tom

    • Hello Tom,

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I love acoustic, and have done ten acoustic pieces in one form or another to date, out of seventy-two:

      Norwegian Wood
      My Sweet Lord
      Little Martha
Everybody’s trying to be my baby
      This Boy
      If I Fell
SRV – Pride And Joy – 12-string solo break
Heard it in a love song
      Baby I Love Your Way
      Can’t You See

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about guitar. What kind of music do you typically play, and how level of guitarist do you consider yourself? Following my strokes, I think I’m probably a high-intermediate.

I found your work by using the wordpress reader, and was glad I did.

      Thanks again for stopping by.

  25. Hello Richard! Thanks for stopping by my side of the planet…Not sure how you came to my world, but I’m honored either way! 🙂

Seeing you play in front of what looks like a fireplace is reminiscent of watching my uncle playing when I was a little girl…I love a good guitar solo… 😉

    • Hi,

A couple of times a week I try to spend some time rummaging through the wordpress reader to see what I might enjoy, and that’s how I found you!

My demos of licks isn’t likely going to have much interest for the general audience, but I’ve found a few beginners and intermediates who appreciate the tips, so I enjoy it.

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

      • Richard,

Nice. Thanks for the quick response.

I took up the six-and 12-string in college. Was a big Leo Kottke fan. In my 20’s I had to sell my guitars to pay rent. I remember talking to my dad on the phone and telling him my dilemma. “Get a good price,” he told me. Thanks, dad, for your support.

I live in Montague, Michigan, and on Wednesday night, fingerpicking virtuoso Chris Proctor is coming to the Howmet Theater in Whitehall, which is just across the causeway. Don’t know if you know of him, but I watched some of his work on youtube, and he’s incredible. I’m guessing that you are a little more wired into music than I am, these days, so you know who I’m talking about. Wish I could go, but I have a previous commitment.

I hope you will continue to share your passion for the guitar with your readers.

        Many blessings to you,

        Mitch

  26. Hey Richard, what a good idea for a Blog. I’ve owned a guitar for over 30 years, a gift from my dad who I lost in 1999. I’ve took lessons 30 years ago and played for years then went thru some nasty life stuff and let it slide, need to make a new commitment. Thanks for stopping by Boomdeeadda.

    • Well thank you.

As you can see from my blog, it’s never too late to start again. I am back to playing poorly, just as I did before my strokes, so all is set-right in my tiny part of the world.

I’d love to change the world

but I don’t know what to do

so I’ll leave it up to you…

  27. Hi there Richard,

You recently stopped by our site and liked my recent post – thank you so very much! It’s a blessing to us whenever we have a new reader who discovers us. I pray that God blesses your gift in music and that you continue to visit us. The lyrics of an old gospel tune just dropped in my mind, “Up above my head, there is music in the air.” I pray one day that we see you in the air.

    God Bless,
    Ma Chris (and Rebecca :))

  28. Richard,
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Mainly because had you not done so I may have not discovered your wonder blog.
I’ve played guitar and mandolin since before I can recall. (actually it was age 7)
I mostly play blues, jazz and bluegrass but love almost all music.
I am certain I will spend hours browsing your posts. I will definately be following, what you do here is completely fantastic.
    Thanks again,
    alison

  29. Hi Richard, thanks for stopping by “Unwalled”…..I’m glad that my post “Sressed? In Turmoil? – There is Stillness in God” was a blessing to you. All the best as you share your talent through your blog in such a helpful way……..blessings!…….Kim

  30. Hi Richard,
Thank you for visiting my blog! I’m trying to get going with it again and I really appreciate your stopping by. Like you, I had a period of illness, in addition to other things, that has definitely slowed my progress. Not to worry though. The cool thing about being your own boss is to lessen the stress and not worry so much. We can take our time. 😉 I really enjoyed your video and copied the tabs. I had forgotten about that song. I have 2 older brothers and lots of other musicians in my family. I never knew the name of that song although the guys/gals around me have been playing it for me my whole life! It is one of my favorite! I just love it! Now its my turn to learn it too! I subscribed over on YouTube and left you a note and shared your vid on FB. Most of my family and friends are musicians. Lots of guitar players! I know they will enjoy it/you as much as I have. Thank you again!
    Sincerely,
    Margaret R. Pangle

    • Hello Margaret,
I am quite happy that I stumbled into your blog, because you are a delightfully positive woman, and that simple act brought you into my life.

Thank you for the kind comments, and I look forward to your posts.

      Warm regards,
      Richard

  31. Hey there – thanks for stopping by my post and the like. I was having a bit of a conundrum recently, whether to pick up piano again or learn the guitar… The piano won (probably because I’m lazy 😉 ) Fair play to you for running such a dedicated blog though. Best wishes, Rachel.

  32. Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post. Most appreciated.
I know a couple of people who play guitar and will find your blog most interesting and inspiring. I’ll pass on your coordinates.
Best of health and happiness to you. Play on!

  33. Thanks for taking the time to stop by my blog today and click on the “Like” button to my most recent blog post. Your blog is fun and interesting. I have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and now I have a place I can go to to learn. Keep up the good work you’re doing here. I hope to hear back from you again soon. Cheers!

    • I am glad I stumbled into your blog. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

I haven’t made any posts that would help a beginning guitarist, but there is no shortage of those kinds on the internet.

All the same, if you start to play, and have any questions, feel free to ask. I would be pleased to help.

    • I enjoyed your post.

I wish they had a “like” button that didn’t make people feel compelled to visit someone who visited their page.

My blog has a very narrow range of people who would be interested, and too many find themselves here for no reason other than I stopped by their blog.

Must be some way to “like” someone’s work without having them waste time seeing guitar licks in which they would have zero interest.

Either way, thanks for stopping by.

  34. Hi Richard, just wanted to say hi and thank you for liking my artwork. No, I don’t play the guitar — but my 12 year old daughter does, so maybe I will turn HER on to your blog! I understand your comment above, but it’s still just nice to see and give props to the folks who pay respect to your work, it’s like clapping. Someone just told me that my paintings remind them of music….i’d be curious what a musician has to say about that. — jocelyn

    • Well thank you.
As someone who struggles to play guitar, I don’t think I am qualified to respond as a musician, but I can tell you that I enjoy your work, and it reminds me that at fifty-five, I am doomed to draw stick-figures forever.

Thank you for your visit and kind comment.

This is representative of my artistic ability, but it does show that I am happy: B ^ )

  35. Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my Books Worth Reading post. My son has an interest in learning to play guitar, and a friend who plays well. I am going to pass along your site to him.

    • Thank you for your visit and comment, but I doubt my blog would be of interest to a beginner, as I’ve made no posts to show how to start, only posts showing my interpretation of a few licks/solos and songs.

But I appreciate your willingness to pass it along all the same.

  36. Thank you for the visit! I play a bit of guitar but unlike this, I learned when I was 23 so I’m not that good. 🙂 I learned to see if I can make songs in the future- well, I may not push through. 😀
But I mostly play music that are in C-G-A-D-E-F scale but I would like to learn more when I have proper time in the near future.:) This blog has just inspired me.

  37. Hi Richard!,
Thanks for visiting and liking my post. I Don’t play guitars but I love to hear and watching Yngwei Malmsteen, Edi Van Hallen, Slash.
My room mate’s when I was a student used to play giutar than I begin to like to hear his Stratocaster….. i’ll pass along your site to him, by the way you can check his playing at this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulBdXXsOKNM
Again, thank you for dropping by, lets connecting the world by sharing knowledge

  38. Thanks Richard for liking one of my blogs. I love music and I wished I play an instrument but I don’t have the patience or talent. That keyboard in my living room has an inch of dust on it.

  39. My two older kids have awesome guitars and really need lessons… I can’t afford them so there they sit… I want to teach them but I really don’t have time as a single mom now I have to provide for us… And their little brother is DeafBlind. So I will email this link to them and maybe they will get on it… 🙂

      • A number of teachers are taking a new approach to teaching guitar. Rather than force beginners to suffer through single-string exercises to learn the notes and very simple melodies; they teach simple guitar chords, and simple progressions using those chords, so the new student quickly learns to play a song, rather than just a melody.

And again, if there is anything I can do to assist, please let me know.

        Best Regards,
        Richard

    • How very kind of you, thank you.

Last year these were all the rage, and I decided during a week in which I received a half-dozen, to just thank people for the thought, and move on.

I enjoy following your blog, and greatly appreciate the fact you thought of mine.

      Thank you.

  40. Hey Richard! I nominated you for a Sunshine Award here: http://notedinnashville.com/2013/04/24/awards-day/ If I recall correctly, you don’t accept awards – so, please just consider this a fancy way of saying thank you for following my blog these past months. And hopefully someone new will find your blog by seeing the link on my page. As always, I’ll still be your blogging buddy. 🙂

      • You were one of the very first people to visit my blog, and I’ve never forgotten the time you helped me figure out how to use You Tube videos for posting my music. That info. made a huge difference in my opportunities and options for this site. Thank you!

  41. Hi! Thanks for stopping by The Writer’s Stuff! And once upon a time, my guitar teacher in music college was Jerry Hahn, who developed the Tab sheet music form… small world among guitarists!

  42. I’m sending a link to this blog to my dad and my brother who are both avid guitarists and will really appreciate everything you are doing here. Thanks for following my blog and I’ll be looking for your updates now too.

    • That is most kind of you, but I’m afraid that my blog is more of a very limited interest. For the most part, I post only those licks/solos and songs I am relearning following the strokes, and very few (..none as of yet) current hits.

That said, I truly appreciate the thought!

  43. Great site Richard – woodshedded with your “One Way Out” lesson – so clear and to the point. Now I can carry my load in the band – had been strictly rhythm – but now I can make it cry and sing. Not like you – but I am trying. Peace –
    TD

    • Very kind of you to say. It is a great feeling to know that you are able to enjoy your instrument to a greater degree because of a little assistance that I might have provided.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know.

    • Over half of the old songs still have them. After tens of thousands of free downloads with less than 100 people cool enough to say thank you, I went back and took out the most popular and now they are no longer free. Too many people feel entitled…

      Nice name…you can’t be a troll.
